MILTON, ONTARIO, January 13, 2023 – Thirteenth-century France gets magic and a touch of the divine in new novel The Nightingale’s Tooth by Sally McBride, out today from publisher Brain Lag.

The book centres on Vara, an upper-class teen girl haunted by visions and destined to life after death and enslavement to the person who slays her. Through a series of trials involving diverse and quirky characters ranging from her devout childhood friend to an adventuress scientist, Vara catches the attention of the power-mad local lord. It will take all Vara’s wits, courage, and loyalty to keep her family free and safe from his rising ambitions.
The Nightingale’s Tooth has been been praised by reviewers, including a starred review from Booklist that said, “With an evocative and well-realized, alternate-history setting with its own strange system of magic, The Nightingale’s Tooth is highly recommended for fans of Mary Gentle, Tamora Pierce, or P. C. Hodgell.” Foreword Reviews said, “The Nightingale’s Tooth is a rich, multilayered fantasy novel that contrasts the brutality of greed and fate with the power of family, friendship, and determination to shape the world into a better place.” And the Ottawa Review of Books wrote, “Another magnificent novel from Sally McBride… I cannot wait to see where she takes things from here.”
As part of the book’s release, there will be a virtual launch party livestreamed on Twitch Saturday, January 14 at 6:00 p.m. EST. It will feature an interview with the author, readings, and Q&A with the chat. The event is free to attend and no registration is required.
