MILTON, ONTARIO, February 3, 2023 – Hot on the heels of author Sally McBride’s first Brain Lag release comes The Fragrance of Orchids and Other Stories, coming this July.
This first collection of McBride’s short fiction features the title story, originally published in Asimov’s Science Fiction, reprinted twice, nominated for the Hugo and Nebula Awards, and winner of Canada’s Aurora Award. Twelve other stories accompany “The Fragrance of Orchids”, ranging from science fiction to fantasy to horror, many blending genres. Most of the stories were previously published in such prestigious journals and anthologies as Amazing, Fantasy & Science Fiction, Realms of Fantasy, Northern Frights, Tesseracts, and On Spec, with some all-new short fiction and a novella exclusive to the collection.
The Fragrance of Orchids and Other Stories is McBride’s second release of 2023, following up the January release of her critically-acclaimed literary fantasy novel The Nightingale’s Tooth. McBride’s long writing career has included two other novels, teaching fiction writing, editing, and co-publishing the magazine TransVersions. Born and raised in Canada, McBride now splits her time between Toronto and the mountains of Idaho, where she enjoys skiing and hiking with her husband.
The Fragrance of Orchids and Other Stories will be released July 14, 2023 in trade paperback and ebook formats from Milton, Ontario-based science fiction and fantasy publisher Brain Lag. This will be the publisher’s sixth short story collection, having previously released one anthology (The Light Between Stars, 2020) and collections from authors Hugh A. D. Spencer (Why I Hunt Flying Saucers and Other Fantasticals, 2016, The Progressive Apparatus and More Fantasticals, 2021), JD DeLuzio (Live Nude Aliens and Other Stories, 2022), and Arlene F. Marks (Imaginary Friends, 2022), all of which have received critical acclaim from venues such as the Toronto Star, Amazing Stories magazine, Booklist, Publishers Weekly, and the Ottawa Review of Books.
The Fragrance of Orchids and Other Stories will be Brain Lag’s 46th title and sixth release of 2023. Another book has been signed from McBride along with short story collections from other authors to come in 2024.
