London, Ontario’s own magical girl Ella Masterson returns this autumn with a new adventure in Legends of Blades and Stories of Each Other by Erynn Q.

The cover was revealed today for this second book in the Other London series. The artwork, by artist Angie “Loppy” Treytyak, features Ella, her friend Zach Wednesday, and antagonist Ary with his familiar, Magpie. The story picks up where the first book, Welcome to the Other London, left off, with Ella attempting to stop Ary in his ongoing search for the dangerous Gemini Artifacts.

With plenty of humour and a diverse cast, including Ella’s same-sex parents and a supporting character newly revealed as genderfluid, the series will appeal to fans of the Rick Riordan Presents line of middle grade novels, aimed at preteen readers. The lighthearted, fast-paced story and anime-style illustrations (forthcoming for this volume) will also appeal to fans of East Asian light novels.

Legends of Blades and Stories of Each Other is releasing September 8, 2023 in trade paperback (192 pages, ISBN 978-1-998795-07-9, $17.99 CAD) and ebook (ISBN 978-1-998795-08-6, $4.99) formats. Preorders will soon be available through bookstores everywhere. A virtual book launch party will be livestreamed over Twitch with the author upon the book’s release, which will be open to the public with no registration required.

Erynn Q is a nonbinary author from London, Ontario who created the Other London series not merely to tell a fun, magical story filled with humour, but also to highlight acceptance of others, including LGBTQIA+ individuals and neurodiverse people. Their local knowledge of London and neighbouring Stratford brings the magic-infused setting of Other London to life.

Legends of Blades and Stories of Each Other is Milton, Ontario SFF publisher Brain Lag’s 48th title and eighth release of eleven planned for 2023. The Other London series joins a handful of young adult titles and one chapter book aimed at ages 6-9.
