The Price of Memory and More Stories, the second collection of short fiction by award-winning author Sally McBride, is now out.
Ranging from space opera to horror to literary, this rich collection contains stories previously published in The Magazine of Science Fiction and Fantasy, Amazing Stories, Asimov’s Science Fiction, Northern Frights, and more, along with three all-new stories from the Aurora Award-winning author. With a wide variety of styles, from comedic to thought-provoking to dark, and featuring characters from weary middle-aged parents to dramatic teenagers to ribald elderly wizards, there is something in this collection for every reader.
A foreword is included by Canadian Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame author Julie E. Czerneda, along with a story co-written by science fiction Grandmaster Alan Dean Foster. Hugo and Nebula Award-winning author Nancy Kress said of the collection, “McBride’s inventive plots and affecting characters will surprise and delight you.”
The Price of Memory and More Stories is now out in trade paperback (304 pages, ISBN 978-1-998795-13-0, $25.99 CAD) and ebook (ISBN 978-1-998795-14-7, $7.99) formats and can be ordered through bookstores everywhere.
McBride’s writing has been praised as “subtle, emotionally engaging” (Ottawa Review of Books) and “sharp, clever, and reasonable” (Science Fiction Short Story Reviews). Her previous collection received rave reviews about her “ability to set a scene nothing less than miraculous” (Julie Czerneda), “lovely sense of playfulness and the clear joy McBride takes in writing” (Publishers Weekly), and “breadth of originality, attention to telling detail, sophisticated characterization, and rich, evocative description” (Amazing Stories magazine). A starred review from Booklist of her 2023 novel The Nightingale’s Tooth highly recommended the book “for fans of Mary Gentle, Tamora Pierce, or P. C. Hodgell.” McBride divides her writing time between the bustle of city life in Toronto and skiing in the mountains of Idaho.
The Price of Memory and More Stories is Milton, Ontario SFF publisher Brain Lag’s sixth release of 2024 and fifty-third published title. It follows up McBride’s historical fantasy novel The Nightingale’s Tooth and her first collection, The Fragrance of Orchids and Other Stories. A fourth book from McBride has been signed for release in 2025. This book joins six other collections from five different authors, with another collection coming in early 2025.
