This fall, young readers get to return to a magical version of Ontario with the release of volume 2 of the Other London series by Lumen Quill.
In Legends of Blades and Stories of Each Other, fifteen-year-old Ella Masterson continues her apprenticeship to the magical Fixer of London, Ontario. Searching for the dangerous Gemini Artifacts and learning to summon a wand takes the plucky young heroine into nearby Stratford, but a double case of body swapping leaves Ella facing off against her greatest enemy alone. With the same humour and charming characters of Welcome to the Other London, this lighthearted urban fantasy will delight middle grade readers once again.
The first book was praised by readers, calling it fresh and exciting and highlighting the book’s episodic nature, a deliberate effort on the author’s part to help appeal to youths with ADHD and encourage them to read. Tony Abbott, award-winning author of Firegirl and the Secrets of Droon series, said, “Erynn Q blends snappy dialogue with fast-paced action in a smart, witty, and very fresh urban fantasy. Sparkling characterization and an inventive plot draw the reader in from page one.”
Legends of Blades and Stories of Each Other will release September 8, 2023 in trade paperback and ebook formats. In a nod to the anime-style narrative, full-page illustrations will once again accompany the text. The cover art will be revealed and preorders will open May 19.
Lumen Quill is a nonbinary author from London, Ontario. Like the Norse goddess Freyja, their chariot is drawn by two monochrome-coloured cats, except instead of a chariot it’s a bright red sectional couch, and instead of pulling it the cats merely keep them company on it. Lumen attempts to write fantasy and sci-fi stories with themes that grabbed their attention as a child. These include interdimensional travel and magic, but also dealing with mental health issues and acceptance of LGBTQ individuals. Welcome to the Other London was their first book.
Legends of Blades and Stories of Each Other is Milton, Ontario-based science fiction and fantasy publisher Brain Lag’s forty-eighth title and will be its eighth release in 2023. The Other London series is the publisher’s first foray into middle grade books, aimed at readers 9-12 years of age.
