The cover art has been revealed and preorders are now open for Altaterra, the standalone follow-up to Dale E. McClenning’s Awakening Earth trilogy.
The front cover features a young woman standing on a hiking trail overlooking a valley surrounded by mountains. The scenery is a nod to the exploratory nature of the first part of the book. The figure represents Xitano, the brusque yet practical apprentice to Kaitja, an Arm of the Law hired to guide a team of scientists deeper into the mountains than their people have ever been.
The science fiction concept of human settlers being brought to a distant, undeveloped world is only a distant backdrop in Altaterra. Instead, this rollicking story for any fan of adventurous fiction takes the reader through dangerous journeys, politics, and conspiracy in a world populated with terror birds and sabre-tooth tigers.
The book will be released August 11, 2023 in trade paperback (236 pages, ISBN 978-1-998795-03-1, $23.99 CAD) and ebook (ISBN 978-1-998795-04-8, $4.99) formats. Preorders are now available directly through the publisher and are making their way into bookstore catalogues. Pre-release copies will be available at Gen Con in Indianapolis, IN August 3-6, where the author will be appearing at the Brain Lag booth in Authors Avenue. Local launch events are also being planned, along with a virtual launch party Saturday, August 12.
Featuring an interview, reading, and Q&A with the chat, the launch party will be livestreamed to Twitch and will be free to attend.

Fulfilling his lifelong dream of becoming a famous author just before he retires, Dale McClenning is transitioning from a job as a mechanical engineer in controls and project work into the exciting and glamorous field of being a world-famous author (still waiting for the last part to take effect). With his wife of 37 years at his side and encouraged by his 10 year old granddaughter, who is still waiting for the book inspired by her to be published, Dale plods on putting out hard science fiction works in that little appreciated field (everyone wants fantasy these days it seems). But never fear, Dale shall continue to write in the literary desert of Indianapolis until he is sure that genre specialty again is fully appreciated.
Altaterra is Milton, Ontario-based SFF publisher Brain Lag’s 48th title and fourth release from McClenning. This is the publisher’s seventh release of eleven planned for 2023.
