Crowdfunding Campaign Starting For Anthology Of Young Transgender Authors

MILTON, ONTARIO, September 30, 2022 – On Monday, October 3, Milton, Ontario-based science fiction and fantasy publisher Brain Lag will be launching a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter to fund the production of True Reflections, an anthology of short stories and poetry by young transgender authors. The pre-launch page is already active and interested parties can follow the project for notification when it begins and updates as it progresses.

After a submission period in the summer, a selection of twelve short stories and two poems were chosen to be included in the book. Editing has begun on the selected pieces and now the publisher is starting a campaign to raise the funds required to cover paying authors for their contributions, the production of the first print run of the book, and other incidentals involved in the process.

The campaign seeks to raise at least $3,500 CAD and will run for thirty days, until November 2nd. If the project exceeds its goal, additional stretch goals are unlocked starting at $4,750 up to $8,500, which include more books for backers, a hardcover release, and the addition of more stories with a second submissions window opening after the campaign ends.

Backer rewards include digital or paperback copies of the finished book and credit for supporting the project, while higher tiers include reviews or editing for authors from the owner and editor for Brain Lag, Catherine Fitzsimmons. Backer rewards start as low as $2 CAD and Fitzsimmons implores viewers to contribute or share what they can. “Every pledge, follow, or share helps us reach our goal,” she said, “and if we can hit those stretch goals, then we can pay the authors more for their work.”

Upon success of the campaign, the book will be slated for release on April 14, 2023. The cover art will be revealed and preorders for the book will open on December 16, 2022.

True Reflections is Brain Lag’s second anthology and will be its forty-fifth book released. Depending on the success of the campaign, Brain Lag may make additional anthologies featuring other marginalized groups in the future.
